Comma

 

The comma is common throught the country. With its wings closed, it is well camouflaged and the distinct white 'comma' mark on the underwing can be seen that gives this species its name.

 

Hibernating as an adult, this is one of the first butterflies to be seen emerging in late February or early March.

 

Wingspan - 50-64mm

On the wing - mid February to late September

Foodplant - common nettle, hop, elms, currants and willows

 

2015 - earliest sighting 20 March
