Peacock

Hibernates as an adult and is one of the first butterflies on the wing, usually in early spring, but can be seen at any time of the year if warm enough.

The peacock is unmistakable due to its large 'eyes' in the corner of both front and hindwings, which they sometimes flash to warn off potential predators.

Wingspan - male 63-68mm and female 67-75mm

On the wing - mid February to early October

Foodplant - common nettle

2015 - earliest sighting 5 April
