Red Admiral
This stunning butterfly is unmistakable with its distinctive combination of black, white and red.
The first major influxes are in late May and early June, with females arriving already mated, and its their offspring that we see in summer and autumn. The species is usually at its most abundant in September but, in mild autumns, can still be seen well into November.
Wingspan: male 64-72mm and female 70-78mm
On the wing: early March to late October
Foodplant: common nettle
