WYRE FOREST

The Wyre Forest straddles the borders of Worcestershire and Shropshire and, at just over 10 sq miles, is one of the largest remaining ancient woodlands in Britain. Its wildlife species include fallow deer and dipper - which can be seen along Dowles Brook - and several butterflies that you won't see around Saltwells LNR including both the pearl-bordered and small pearl-bordered fritillary, and wood white.

2015

May 11 - A warm pleasant day and my first visit of the year proved quite fruitful with a few pearl bordered fritillary sightings.

May 16 - A first for me - a wood white! These were spotted in Hurst Coppice along with a green hairstreak, dingy skipper, brimstone and pearl bordered fritillary among others. Not a bad day all in all!

June 5 & 6  - A couple of trips over two days proved quite fruitful with decent numbers of wood white particularly on June 5. Both pearl-bordered and small pearl-bordered fritillaries were also on the wing.
