Green Hairstreak

Like all hairstreaks, this species is easily overlooked and is particularly difficult to spot due to the green underside of its wings. Territorial males have favourite perches on prominent shrubs, ready to either launch attacks on any intruding males or to chase passing females.

When perched, always with wings closed, they are quite tame and approachable.

Wingspan: 27-34mm

On the wing: Early May to late June

Foodplant: common bird's foot trefoil or gorse and broom

2015 - earliest sighting 11 June

9 June 2013, Saltwells LNR
