 Small Tortoiseshell

 

Another hibernating species which is usually first seen on warm sunny days in March or April. It generally starts to prepare for hibernation as early as late July or August.

 

Readily identified by its attractive pattern and delightful blue edges to both wings.

 

Wingspan - male 45-55mm and female 52-62mm

On the wing - mid February to early October

Foodplant - common nettle, small nettle and occasionally hop

 

2015 - earliest sighting 21 March
