Marbled White

 

This attractive distinctive butterfly is widespread in southern England and southern Wales, and has been extending its range in recent years.

 

When sunbathing, they are highly approachable, taking little or no notice of observers. In bright sunshine and the heat of the day adults feed with their wings tightly closed.

 

Wingspan: male 53mm and female 58mm

On the wing: early June to late August

Foodplant: both red and sheep's fescue, yorkshire-fog and tor-grass
